Louis Bhutan 1859-1934

premiere photo sous marine eau plongeur La première photo sous leau

Louis Bhutan has made the first underwater pictures in 1893 to a depth of 80 meters, one above was her first successful photograph.
Bhutan trying to make these photos for some years in Banyuls-sur-Mer unsuccessfully had tried to drown the camera under the water, enclosed in a box, nothing worked until it achieves waterproof suit in which he inserted the device.
The device was so massive that it took 3 people to lift it on earth.
Like the films of the time were not very sensitive he had to use electric arcs provided by batteries to act as a flash and despite that exposure lasted over 30 minutes during which he was to remain motionless underwater.
