" He's not a Boy That You Can tame, I know you want to !
And you can wait all night, you can wait all day But, he's not a Boy That You Can Change.
He's not a Boy That You Can Save. "

Five years have passed since the first album The Like, Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking . As waiting could only mean two things: either the group was making big changes, or there would never be a second. The first solution proved to be correct. Change of line-ups, record label, producer, style, look etc.. Since the hiring of a keyboardist and bassist change The Like became a foursome playing pop for Downtown Records.

Far from looking like a folk version of Au Revoir Simone as on their debut album, the four Californians have been inspired by the British Invasion . Mark Ronson, producer of Amy Whinehouse there is surely no coincidence. These influences are felt even in their new look. Twiggy mannequin of the song to Emma Peel (the boots Avengers Leather ) keyboard, through Priscilla Presley on bass, their style icons terribly reminiscent of the 60's. The Mods are not far away ...

This 180 ° turn is transcribed in the texts of the course group. Release Me is, as its title suggests, a "break-up album." During the 30 minutes of listening, singer-guitarist Elizabeth Berg (better known as the Z ) speaks only to regain his freedom. From the first song, Wishing He Was Dead , the tone is set: Z have his revenge on the man who has cheated, lied ( I Can See It In Your Eyes ) And that will never change ( He's not a boy ). In short, she does not want this man who did not suit him ( Release Me). Rest assured, Z does not live only for revenge, as she spends her evenings getting drunk and dancing to do things she regretted the next day ( Walk of Shame ). After my praise
Emily Haines (Metric ), Fredrika Stahl and Debbie Harry (Blondie ), you will believe that I only like female voices ... What do you want? The flesh is weak ... Especially the ears. Even greatly helped by choristers, Z knows his craft as a singer and not only play the vases. This is mainly why The Like distinguished pipettes with which many writers compare them. Merely to bring their clothing styles, they have forgotten to note that The Like consisted of real musicians.

Musically, then, the transformation is impressive. Indeed, the two new members bring to the group that little extra that was lacking in their first game. The bass is more pointed and sometimes recalls the hits of Motown . Introductions of Narcissus In A Red Dress and In The End in their first notes sounded like pieces of Temptations or Stevie Wonder. The keyboard melodies, meanwhile, are terrible in and the voices of newcomers are heard on all songs. Both new members are the guarantors of the signature 60's, and trademark of this album.

If you are not looking for texts worthy of Woody Guthrie or the Jimmy Page solo, but a nice album of good pop on which uninhibited dance, sing or put some guitar chords, I do would strongly advise you Release me. Girls of The Like finally showed their teeth, waiting for their next assault to be bitten. Hopefully this does not take them five years ...

Good weather to listen to the album:
habits die hard: it will still be expensive ... To listen Release Me, I advise you to travel to the UK Kingdom, on the beaches of Brighton. Top place in the history of British rock for having served as a battleground for opposing the riots at Mods Teddy Boys , these beaches are now addressed. Park your Vespa , sit down, get a turntable laptop and enjoy this album.

The song of the album:
Do not Make a Sound . I particularly recommend the acoustic version performed live for Rolling Stones Magazine . When Annie Monroe, became the keyboardist vocalist for the occasion, begin to sing, you immediately get goosebumps.

The sequence of good taste:
You Really Got Me Kinks of if you want the same kind of energy or I Believe You Liar Megan Washington for the next dance.
